I remember when I got the machine I had similar issues but fixed it by installing an available graphics driver from intel (early days of intel HD I think 2014) but that does not appear to be an option now. It looks to me like support for my graphics is not available now. I switch between recovery mode and normal boot to reimplement nomodeset, when this is in place the edge of the screen is not visible but other than that I can use the system. I can even see a mouse pointer if I move it just before reaching the desktop background but once fully booted I can only see the background image and cannot use shortcuts for example to bring up the terminal. Without this I boot to a desktop background screen where I can switch workspaces, hear usb sticks inserting and shutdown from by pressing the on off switch (the machine is set to shutdown immediately on power switch). I cannot get the machine to display correctly without nomodeset in grub. Problem is I appear to have traded one driver issue for a new one. Just got a Brother MFC-L2710DW which works on all machines perfectly so I updated. I'd been keeping that machine on an older OS to maintain scanner support for my Samsung SCX3200 multifunction (cannot scan after 17.3). ![]() ![]() I just updated one of my computers from Cinnamon 17.3 to 20.1.
